Where do I start if I want to start my own business?
Usually every business starts with an idea or ambition. Try brainstorming on a piece of paper different ideas you think might work. Just write down as many ideas you can think of and then rank them in order of most desirable to least desirable. That is a good place to start.
I have my idea now what?
Goals, goals, goals, goals. Again take a piece of paper, and try to figure out what your trying to accomplish. Do you want to be able to quit your job? Are you looking to be able to take a vacation every year? What are your personal goals?
Then you need a plan of action (poa). Any and every business had to have a blue print or a plan to follow. With out a plan you are dead in the water. Research is important in this phase. Find other people who have done what you are trying to do. If you can find a mentor it would be infinitely helpful to your cause.
I have a plan I now know what’s entailed, I want to establish my business as a legitimate practice how do I do that?
Most towns in most states allow you to go to the town hall and register your business. It’s usually a minimal fee to do this. After you establish your business your going to want to go to your states website and obtain a tax id number. This is how your going to file your taxes.
I have the ground work down, what else should I know?
If I were a business owner just starting out, I’d also pick up Quicken, it will help keep track of sales and expenses. This is all stuff the IRS would want you to keep track of. You’d also want to track this information so you know if your business is making money or losing money.
